“Cushing is endorsed.”

The Chicago Tribune, March 6, 2016

The Chicago Tribune, Chicago’s largest newspaper weighing in on judicial races, endorsed Tom Cushing for judge on March 6, 2016.

In endorsing Tom, the Tribune stated, “Thomas Maloney Cushing got exceptional reviews from the CBA and the Council of Lawyers. He has broad experience as a civil litigator and has worked for the Chicago Climate Exchange and as assistant counsel to Chicago’s Shakman decree monitor. He’s also an adjunct professor at Loyola University Law School.”

The Tribune based its endorsement on bar association evaluations and interviews with attorneys and judges who know the candidates.

“This reinforces what we knew all along,” said campaign manager Joe Cushing, “that Tom’s great credentials and character would set him apart.”

Chicago, December 9, 2015 –

Top-rated candidate Thomas Maloney Cushing entered the race for Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in a sprint when he filed over 9,000 signatures to run for the Michael J. Howlett, Jr. vacancy county-wide on November 30, 2015. A veteran elections lawyer stated that he had never seen such a large, high-quality signature effort by an independent candidate. The December 7 deadline for objections to petitions passed without a challenge to Cushing’s filing, assuring him a spot on the March 15, 2016 ballot in the Democratic primary.

The Cushing for Judge campaign hopes to carry the momentum it built in 2014 when Cushing ran for Judge from the 9th Subcircuit. In 2014, Cushing was one of only four candidates for Cook County Judge out of the sixty-seven vetted by local bar associations to receive both “Highly Qualified” and “Well Qualified” ratings from the Chicago Bar Association and the Chicago Council of Lawyers. He was also endorsed by eleven past or current Presidents of bar associations such as the ISBA, CBA, ITLA, Society of Trial Lawyers and the Illinois Judges Association.

The Cushing for Judge Campaign is off to a fast fundraising start. According to public filings, it has raised more than $35,000 before staging its first fundraiser or reporting any contributions from the candidate.

Thomas Maloney Cushing is a twenty-seven year lawyer who has focused on civil litigation, with an emphasis on professional negligence, personal injury and high-stakes commercial disputes. He is a long-time adjunct at Loyola University School of Law and has done significant work in environmental advocacy, particularly to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through financial incentives. In the community, Cushing was a board member at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls for more than twenty years and has volunteered consistently in youth education and athletics. He and his wife Ellen are raising four young adults.
